Background of the Study
Mental health issues among the elderly, such as depression, anxiety, and social isolation, are significant concerns globally, with a particularly notable impact in low-resource settings. In Borno State, Nigeria, the effects of conflict, displacement, and limited access to mental health services exacerbate these issues among elderly individuals (Alhassan et al., 2023). Community-based support programs, which may include peer support groups, volunteer initiatives, and local mental health outreach, have been shown to improve mental well-being and reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety in elderly populations (Akinyemi et al., 2024). However, the extent to which such programs influence the mental health of elderly patients in Borno State has yet to be comprehensively studied. This review aims to explore the impact of community-based support programs on elderly patients’ mental health in Borno State, drawing from existing literature and local initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
Elderly individuals in Borno State face numerous mental health challenges, including the trauma of displacement and the lack of adequate mental health services. Despite evidence of the positive effects of community-based support programs on elderly mental health in other regions, there is limited research regarding their impact in Borno State. The review seeks to evaluate how these programs can be tailored to address the specific needs of elderly patients and assess their effectiveness in improving mental health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the influence of community-based support programs on the mental health of elderly patients in Borno State.
To identify the key components of effective community-based support programs for the elderly in Borno State.
To examine the challenges and barriers to the implementation of community-based mental health support programs in Borno State.
Research Questions

What are the essential components of effective community-based support programs for the elderly in Borno State?
What challenges hinder the successful implementation of community-based mental health programs for the elderly in Borno State?
Research Hypotheses
Community-based support programs significantly improve the mental health of elderly patients in Borno State.
Elderly individuals who participate in community-based support programs report lower levels of depression and anxiety.
Limited resources and lack of trained personnel significantly hinder the effectiveness of community-based mental health programs in Borno State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This review will focus on community-based support programs aimed at improving the mental health of elderly patients in Borno State. Limitations include a potential lack of reliable data on the effectiveness of these programs and the varied nature of such initiatives in different communities within the state.
